Fayose and Ekiti 19 law makers

Establishing The Rule of Law in a Changed
Environment- Prof Bolaji Aluko
June 1, 2015
My People:
Today, tomorrow - or in the next few days, and
certainly before this week is out - the Rule of
Law should begin to be (re-)established in the
country - and it must start with our dear Ekiti
State, then proceed to any state under similar
dire straits.
For spurious reasons, nineteen duly-elected Ekiti
House of Assembly lawmakers have been shut
out of law-making for over five months (?) now
out of fear by the incumbent Governor Fayose
that he will be impeached, and his "freely-given
mandate" thereby shortened. Their salaries have
been stopped, and their personal safety put in
jeopardy to boot by thuggish threats. As a result
six, other lawmakers more favorable to Fayose
have been meeting in the Legislative Chambers
instead of twenty-five, choosing a
"Speaker" (Olugbemi) for themselves in place of
the legitimate one (Omirin), and passing laws and
approving budgets for the Governor to exercise
with impeachable impunity.
All of this has been made possible under police
protection sanctioned by the ancien régime in
Abuja. With ancien now changed to nouveau, one
expects that the described impunity to be
hurriedly reversed, so that the lawmakers can get
on with their job - whatever that might be, few
days to the end of their tenure notwithstanding.
